As Judge/ Executive of Gallatin County for the past five years, I can attest to the fact that this county is definitely booming. We are the third fastest growing county in Kentucky.
Once a quiet rural county with tobacco farming as it's major income crop, now the county has been transformed by industry and tourism that supports the growth and income for it's citizens.
In the mid 1990's, industry became attracted to our county because of the access to river, rail, and interstate. Other major companies like Gallatin Steel were soon to follow. These new jobs raised the local residents wage rates considerably. The economy began to show growth and virtually no unemployment . It has been a pleasure to sit back and see our citizens become more prosperous; our schools grow and education levels improved for our children.
Gallatin County is the home of Kentucky Speedway and we are looking forward to the first Nascar race. The speedway activity has caused new roads to be built, road improvements have come to pass, and Indiana will soon be linked to Interstate I-71 with the new highway Kentucky highway 1039 that will cut across the western end of Gallatin County at the Markland Dam.
The great Ohio River borders Gallatin County on the northwest side andthe backwaters that were created in the 1960's when Markland Dam was built gave us a passageway to Indiana. The building of this dam has caused the land just end to flooded with water that created a 1,000 acre lake known as Craig's Creek. This lake and surrounding areas have flourished with water attractions and new homes.
We want you to enjoy, and thank you for visiting Gallatin County.
